The new record on Parco della Musica Records is the debut album by “Weave4,” a French-Italian collective that brings together two generations of world-class artists and longtime collaborators: the French Benoit Delbecq on the piano and Steve Arguelles on drums and the Italians Francesco Bigoni on tenor saxophone and clarinet and Francis Diodati on guitar. The record was recorded in 2021 with support from Creative Europe and Bureau de Son, after a two-week residency in Paris. Each of the members writes for the collective, with the constraint of a skillfully organized weave of sounds and textures that are organically transformed through the practice of improvisation. The pieces do not follow rigid and predictable structures but become malleable and flexible matter, giving a new vision to the concept of “unfinished” in music. Between revisitations of pieces already entrusted to other ensembles (“Blomme,” “Chemin sur le Crest”), compositions made for the occasion (“3-4-5,” “One-Cross Spoke,” “Neither and Both”) and notes collectively worked out during the recording session (“Landscape”), one is taken through the listening to a work that revolves around the idea of polyvitesse: a term that, in French, sounds deliberately spurious and mestizo and has to do with the presence of multiple rhythmic pulsations, but also, by extension, with a multifocal approach to the musical materials used.
