Mauro Ottolini, one of the most eclectic and creative musicians on the international scene, returns to record for Parco della Musica Records. As with all Mauro Ottolini‘s projects, the basis is deep musical research and special care in proposing the jazz tradition as well. In “Storyville Story,” the trombonist and arranger takes the viewer on an exciting journey to discover jazz music and the musicians who made New Orleans history. The right companion was needed to make this journey, and Fabrizio Bosso turned out to be ideal.
The selection consists of songs by such outstanding authors as William Christopher Handy, also known as the father of the blues for his prolific compositional vein. Handy gave birth to hundreds of polythematic, blue-toned tunes that became the musical repertoire of all jazz musicians at the time. Great voices and personalities fundamental to jazz music such as Louis Armstrong, Original Dixieland Jazz Band, Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, King Oliver, Fats Waller, Sweet Emma Barret, Lil’ Hardin. The focus is on a primal Jazz with a choral vocation and primal intensity, telling stories of men and women, tales of music, love, missing money, and games of chance, painting a small, painstaking portrait of early twentieth-century New Orleans.
