Federica Michisanti is among the musicians who have most distinguished themselves in recent years in the Italian jazz scene. “Jeux De Couleurs” is his fourth album, second with theHorn Trio after the successful “Silent Rides,” produced by Parco della Musica Records. The lineup also includes Francesco Bigoni and Francesco Lento. Both the title of the album and the individual tracks, each of which invokes a different color and all signed by the leader, refer to the idea of interdisciplinarity of the arts and synesthesia between music and colors, in assonance with the trio’s characteristic timbral aspect.
TheHorn Trio is a formation without the drums and harmonic instruments, an absence that leaves more freedom for unconventional use of the roles of individual instruments. In the new compositions, clear is the common thread that has characterized Federica Michisanti ‘s musical production so far: the use of harmonies and musical intervals within a single voice or distributed among the parts that lead toward distinct sonorities and suggestions. The themes are more articulated than in the past thanks in part to the use of polyrhythms in some cases and different rhythmic figurations in others.
Also in “Jeux De Couleurs,” as in the previous records, in addition to improvisations on harmonic structures there are some free improvisations, quite different from each other both in content and functionality. In some cases they are included in the piece with the characteristic of a strong link to the theme of the composition to which they belong; in others they serve as a link between the themes of two pieces, or again, as in the last track “Improvisation Des Couleurs,” the extemporaneous improvisations are displayed as short movements of a small suite. The music sketches lines and shapes and the sounds of the instruments mix like colors, creating original hues.
