Jazz

Eponymous

Hobby Horse

A jazz album that crosses genre boundaries with influences of free jazz, ambient, rock and flashes of electronic music.

After four years of activity, three self-produced records and a hundred concerts in Italy, Europe and the United States, jazz group Hobby Horse released Eponymous for Parco della Musica Records. The work testifies to the deep exploration of the sonic possibilities of this trio composed of some of the most highly regarded jazz musicians of the emerging generation in Italy-Dan Kinzelman and Joe Rehmer, both Americans now living in Umbria, and Stefano Tamborrino, a drummer from Florence.

An engaging cross between hypnotic improvisations and explosive dynamism, Hobby Horse ‘s music crosses genre boundaries with influences from free jazz, ambient, rock and flashes of electronic music. The proposed repertoire is varied with original compositions by the trio alongside pieces by Tom Waits, Robert Wyatt and Thelonius Monk. The interplay of the group is evident, and the years of shared experience make possible a fresh, engaging and surprising dialogue among the musicians.

Hobby Horse was founded in 2008 with a repertoire firmly rooted in tradition, but the group quickly moved into new horizons. During the past few years, they have been exploring the timbral limits of the trio by using unusual instruments (tin and drawstring flutes, glockenspiel, melodica, synthesizers and others) and experimenting with the use of vocals, resulting in an almost orchestral richness of sound and a surprising impact for such a small formation.

  • Dan Kinzelman - winds, keyboards
  • Joe Rehmer - double bass, keyboards
  • Stefano Tamborrino - drums, percussion, vocals
