Home Productions Around Gershwin
he new Parco della Musica Records record, “Around Gershwin,” brings together three Italian jazz masters, Giovanni Tommaso, Rita Marcotulli and Alessandro Paternesi. The jazz trio’s repertoire is based on some famous standards by George Gershwin (such as “But Not For Me,” “How Long Has This Been Going On” and “‘S Wonderful”) and some original compositions by John Thomas. The arrangements of the standards are deliberately in the contemporary style of the other original songs to give homogeneity to the whole work. The titles of some original songs hint at the clear reference to Gershwin‘s heritage, such as “An Italian in Paris” and “Wintertime.” The music is based on articulated structures, both harmonically and rhythmically, but the great interplay of the musicians and the improvised parts well represent their ideal synthesis of the artistic journey that is not intended to disregard what is called “the language of jazz.” Critics also appreciated this new trio.
