Home Productions Across every border
The group Opus Magnum is a jazz music quartet operating since 2018 and formed by Ettore Fioravanti, Marco Colonna, Igor Legari and Andrea Biondi. The development of a sonic identity dictated by the ‘originality of the lineup, the quality of the performers and the refinement of a deep interplay, has prompted the group to seek other ways forward both compositionally and in terms of the palette of musical colors at their disposal. Hence the desire to add to the quartet two very talented players with characteristics both of discipline and freedom: Francesco Fratini (trumpet and flugelhorn) and Filippo Vignato (trombone).
By thinking of pieces that combine writing and improvisation, respect for the role of the instrument and its questioning, and above all personalization of the written part by performers of refined jazz skills, the result is a sound picture that ranges from a kind of musical theater with soloists simulating characters in a dialogue to symphony-inspired choruses, from complex rhythmic inlays to spaces of long sonic expanse, from moments of quotation from the great jazz musicians of the day before yesterday (Monk) and yesterday’s(Weather Report) to fields of total individual and collective freedom. The title “Across Every Border” alludes to a customs-free transit between territories with different languages and traditions, and some of the song titles (“Bering,”” San Diego,” “Gibraltar”) recall places of passage between states with different cultures, languages, colors and sounds but nevertheless always compatible.
