Rising temperatures, droughts, climate instability, out-of-control fires. We have lived in the age of fire, the Pyrocene, ever since we learned to cook food and heat ourselves, but throughout history our relationship with the environment has evolved to the point where we have become a geological force capable of altering ecosystems and ecological niches. Fire and heat are increasingly our curse, but also the symbol of our ingenuity and adaptability. New ways-technological, cultural, anthropological-are needed to live with fire and the environment. And new stories are needed to tell them.
