A fire historian and professor emeritus at Arizona State University, he has written fire histories for the world. In "Pyrocene" he distills what he has learned, arguing that the fire practices that have distinguished humanity have led to the equivalent of an ice age today. As a young man, he spent 15 seasons with the North Rim Longshots, a fire team at Grand Canyon National Park. He lives on an urban farm in Arizona.
