Since 1993 he has been doing research for the Museo Galileo in Florence, where he is deputy scientific director, and since 2009 he has been an adjunct associate professor of History of Science at Texas A&M University (Italian branch). Editor of "Automata," a journal on the history of science and technology devoted to the ancient world and the Middle Ages, he has lectured extensively in Italy and abroad and is the author of more than 70 publications including monographs, editorships and articles in scientific journals. In 2021 he was short listed to the position of director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park.
